The hope of the Church is not in our own ingenuity or power, but in the Spirit’s empowering presence. This means that God often forges diamonds from rough situations, and that those the world least expects to excel are often the ones most powerfully commissioned by God. Like Samuel, we see and are impressed by height. But God looks at the heart. And God’s gift of his Spirit is not according to height, but according to heart. Indeed this is God’s message for us: God gives his Spirit to fill the heart and flood the sight of those who put their trust in his empowering presence.
